the tracking of the components from the beginning of the supply chain through to the customer. With the agreement of the other members of the supply chain to take
part the plan can be developed to implement a new system. The development and use internet and extensible markup language (XML) provides the firm with a number of cost effective
opportunities. Prior to the development of XML supply chain management was likely to take place with electronic data interchange (EDI) (Bloomberg, 2001). EDI has had a number of
disadvantages; it has been difficult to automate more than just a small percentage of procurement and can be expensive to implement and then to maintain. XML offers the ability to
overcome the problems of EDI is a cost effective manner (Bloomberg, 2001). The ability to develop a system that can not only track goods from the supplier through production
to the end users presents challenges, the abulty to automat this would be enhances and could be combined with other technologies such as RFID for goods inwards and goods outward
movements. With the XML system, many of which are supplied off the shelf, there is an ability to automate the point to point sales ((Bloomberg, 2001).
