(2010) recognized that in an increasingly diverse nursing culture, different people view health, illness and methods for healthcare in different ways, creating some distinct challenges that can result in stress for nurses. Specifically, Hanssen & Alpers aim was to flesh out views that ethical issues can cause tension in nursing staff and that this type of conflict can hinder the effectiveness of nurses in the healthcare environment. Hanssen & Alpers related the fact that within a transcultural nursing perspective, diversity can impact how individuals perceive their care in the clinical setting. Subsequently, the conflict that nurses feel over their capacity for care and their decision-making can result in ethical or moral stress or stress of conscience. As a result of this focus, the authors go on to relate views on two different issues, who needs single rooms and how far nurses should go to comply with the wishes of ethnic minority patients (Leininger, 2006). Hanssen & Alpers assess these issues in relation to both utilitarian and commonsense morality perspectives that are believed to be common in shaping ethical responses by nurses. This article provides valuable information because it defines the link between transcultural nursing process and conflict that occurs for nursing staff that can result in moral stress or stress of conscience (Fry, Hurly & Foley, 2002). Because unresolved ethical issues can be a considerable source of stress for nursing staff, this article relates some of the problems that can occur when applying a transcultural approach to developing ethical standards for nursing staff.
