The population of White Non-Hispanic citizens is decreasing while the population of other races and ethnicities is increasing. Furthermore, the population is aging. There are increasingly more people over the age of 65 and many are still in the workforce. This shift in the countrys demographics has had a dramatic effect on organizations. The traditional structure is one that hires and promotes White males. That is also changing, albeit still slowly. There are more women and more non-White males in positions of authority but there is still inequality. The proportions are small. Women comprise significantly more than half of the workforce but they do not occupy even half of the managerial positions and even fewer top executive positions. This is true in all of our institutions, including the U.S. Congress. If companies want to succeed in this century, they are will need to develop and implement a strong diversity strategic plan. Research consistently demonstrates that diverse organizations outperform other organizations. Diversity offers a strong competitive advantage to companies.
