other. The rapidity and degree of changes in the world in the last two decades have been very nearly overwhelming to many. Everyone seems to have trouble keeping up with
the changes in technology, for instance. The challenge businesses face is staying on the cutting edge, retaining their competitive advantage in a world that is constantly changing. Despite these
economic facts, trying to implement a change in any organization is a major challenge. It is an endeavor that fails more often than it succeeds. The difficulties come from two
areas: 1.) the attempt to design a process that is better in some way than the existing process; and 2.) the attempt to get people to accept and embrace the
new process without sabotaging it. Anyone who has ever been involved in implementing a significant change in an organization will readily testify that the second factor, i.e., getting people to
change, is by far the more difficult of the two (Howardell, 2000). The catalyst statement for this essay is: "Strategic change doe not take place simply because it is considered
to be desirable; it takes place if it can be made to work." The statement is a little misleading because it would be foolish for an organization to embark upon
a change that could not be made to work. That is an exercise in futility. Thus, this essay will address what is perceived to be the intention behind the statement:
how does an organization overcome resistance to change. The writer will address this issue by investigating different aspects of change theory, such as reasons for change, resistance to change, and
