greed has been illustrated throughout history in the form of imperialism. By definition, imperialism is the extension of power and influence of a
nation or state over other nations, territories or groups of people. In accordance with this broad definition it follows that there are degrees of imperialistic control. While some
may restrict imperialism to territorial control or the acquisition of colonies others understandably view it as the complete political domination of lesser satellite states. Sometimes political influence and even
control can be exercised through indirect means. Obtaining concessions such as the right to develop mines or oil wells, to build railroads and so forth, or to organize and
train the armed forces often results in very direct influence but is not connected with actual political domination. An example of this is the building of The Baghdad Railway,
a German concession obtained from Turkey in 1899, which, while an economic project, served political ends and was the cause of much bickering among the powers of Europe leading to
our eventual first world war. There was obviously no intention of establishing German colonies in this region, but nonetheless the railway was vigorously opposed by Russia and Great Britain
for years. An understanding of both imperialisms definition as well as its indirect influences is essential to comprehending how it was one of the dominating causes of World
