many theorists have looked at the influences on international trade. With an hypothesis that increased trade between countries will breed familiarities and result in increased political and social ties which
in turn will further support the trading relationships. To consider the scope of the research it is essential to look at the
way international trade may take place and the way trade agreements may impact on trade and the influences that make precede or follow which will impact on the political or
social issues, and look at the degree to which free trade, or preferential trade agreements, may manifest, or fail to manifest. If Australia is looking to benefit from increased trade
as a result of gaining a closer relationship ASEAN the lessons from international trade theory and the lessons and observances form other areas may be a useful guide to help
with an assessment. When looking at many trading agreement it is apparent that a trading agreements alone does not necessarily precipitate significant increases
in trade. Fukase and Martin (2000) observed only small trade gains following Vietnams ascension to the ASEAN. The lack of increased trade was partly explained by the already existing trading
relationship with Singapore, where there where relativity few barriers. When looking at ASEAN Elliott and Ikemoto (2003) found that although ASEAN countries
have seen increased level of intra-regional trade taking place, there has been a greater level of increased trade with countries external to the agreement. The results here were not new,
Tan (1992) found that where preferential trade agreements took place it could increase levels of competition rather than creating a complimentary environment work supported by Garnaut and Drysdale, (1994).
