times of crisis and violence. This paper considers the impact of youth violence on communities, and what social work can do to observe social problems and injustices that occur. Discussion In 1998, Dr. Rodney Hammond, of the National Center for Injury Prevention and Control of the CDC testified before the Committee on Education and the Workforce House Subcommittee on Early Childhood, Youth and Families about the damage youth violence is doing to communities across the country. He pointed out that although the homicide rate in general has declined, youth homicide remains extremely high (Hammond, 1998). Homicide was the "second leading cause of death" for young people from 15-24; it is the "leading cause of death for African-Americans in this age group" (Hammond, 1998). He also noted that violence is not confined to the inner cities, but has become a problem in cities and towns across America (Hammond, 1998). As examples, he uses the various school shootings that have shocked the nation: in the "Jonesboro, Arkansas, Paducah, Kentucky, and Pearl, Mississippi shootings, all of the perpetrators were white males of an median age of 13.5; all of the fatalities were white female of an median age of 14.5; and all of the perpetrators and victims knew each other" (Hammond, 1998). He was testifying before the Columbine shooting, but it only serves as a further example of the carnage that results from youth violence. The result of these shootings on the community is devastating: parents no longer feel that school campuses are safe, and those are the very places where young people are supposed to be secure and able to learn.
