had on the conscious of the country during the antebellum era. Examination of the novel shows it to be very much a product of the Northern abolitionist movement and critical
analysis also demonstrates why it had such an enormous impact, prompting Lincoln to make his famous assessment. The plot of Uncle Toms Cabin conveys tremendous pathos. A brief summation
of the novels plot indicates both its sentimentality and its power. The narrative begins by describing how Arthur Shelby, a Kentucky farmer, sells two of his slaves, Uncle Tom and
Harry, to slave trader in order to cover his debts. Harry manages to escape to the North, with his mother Eliza, but Uncle Tom is transported further South, where he
meets Eva, saves her life and is purchased by her father, St. Clare. As Tom integrates into the St. Clare household, Harry and his mother find shelter in a Quaker
settlement. After St. Clare dies, his widow sells Tom to Simon Legree, while in the other plot line, Harry, along with Eliza and her husband George, cross over into Canada
and achieve the goal of freedom. After Legree learns that Tom encouraged two of his slaves, Cassy and Emmeline to escape, he vows to break the mans spirit and his
Christian faith. When Uncle Tom is close to death, George Shelby, son of his first master, arrives with the intent to purchase Tom and set him free. However, he is
