Nursing professional development fulfils this need in a variety of ways, such as through the promotion of evidence based practice; the introduction of theoretical nursing models into practice and clinical
settings and by providing practitioners with guidance in helping their hospitals achieve magnet status. The following review of literature examines a few of the large body of knowledge addressing these
aspects of nursing development. There is a "rich body of research" that describes the processes involved in turning a novice nurse with a freshly minted diploma into an experienced
veteran, and this process includes the assimilation of "ethical reasoning" with the nursing clinical environment (Andrews, 2004, p. 27). As this suggests, part of the purpose of professional development is
to continue the assimilation of new nurses into the cultural and professional fabric of nursing. A crucial focus in nursing knowledge assimilation and dissemination is the current emphasis on
evidence-based practice (EBP), that is, nursing practices that have been empirically proven to be superior and effective. EBP has been defined as "integration of the best evidence available, nursing expertise,
and the values and preferences of the individuals, families and communities who are served"(Reavy and Tavernier, 2008, p. 166). Nursing leaders and educators agree that in order to bring about
improved patient outcomes, both now and in the future, the EBP approach to nursing must become the professional norm and should be incorporated into nursing care in all clinical practice
