This trend momentarily stopped after the terrorist attacks of 9/11 and the discovery that 15 of the 19 hijackers were from Saudi Arabia. Many Saudi students, as well as other
Muslim students, feared repercussions and returned home. This development has worried both the US and Saudi governments. Consequently, these governments have agreed that the best way to dispel negative
apprehensions between Saudi and American nationals is to encourage continued contact. Therefore, over the next four years, the Saudi government will provide scholarships for 20,000 Saudi students to study
in the US and the American government has promised to speed visa procedures for this group (Chu and Shannon 63). Obviously, the Saudi government has no fear that American influence
on its culture, via the exposure of so many students to American life, will have a detrimental effect of their society. As indicated above, having an American education is
not a new development in Saudi Arabia. For Saudi politicians, it has become traditional for the best and brightest to be educated in the US, which is illustrated by the
fact that three-quarters of the current Cabinet members studied in American institutions. Dr. Faisal al-Sugair, a Stanford Ph.D., pointed out that since the 1950s more than 200,000 Saudis have earned
degrees in the US (Tracy). Prior to 2001, as many as 15,000 Saudi student studied in the US every year (Tracy). It is difficult, if not impossible, to unravel
a countrys cultural fabric to the point that behaviors can be attributed definitively to the influence of this or that country. For example, Saudi cities are definitely Westernized, but it
would be difficult to say that one trait is influenced by the US, while other evolve from European influences. Nevertheless, the impact of American education on Saudi culture can be
