fear, anger, guilt, frustration, and hopelessness. This is a hard disease to accept and people often fear the stigma that is attached to this mental illness. Family and friends will
be confused by the bizarre behaviors the patient may observe. Even patients whose symptoms are controlled by medication will have relapses leaving the family in a state of anxiety and
frustration (Smith, 2006). It is helpful to have several support systems, such as professional day-care facilities, case managers, providers, churches, friends or roommates. All of them need to have an
understanding of this illness and how to deal with it (Smith, 2006). Help Guide (2011) suggests the first step is to accept that the person has the illness and that
it is going to be difficult to interact and deal with the patient. The caregivers, family, and friends need to have reasonable expectations for the patient as well as for
oneself. Finally, it is critical to maintain a sense of humor. Patients with schizophrenia often live at home which means family members will be performing most of the caretaker responsibilities
(Smith, 2006). They need to realize they will become tired and frustrated. What family and friends can do to help the patient is to become educated about the illness.
Learn about it and what to expect. Reduce stress in the environment as much as possible. Have the patient do as much as they can themselves (Health Guide, 2011).
