The Korean Conflict is often referred to as Americas forgotten war, having happened so soon after the end of World War II. Korean veterans were never honored, just as Vietnam
veterans. Both Russia and the United States had strong political interests in Korea. The country was divided along the 38th parallel as the boundary between North and South. Russia supported
the Communist Kim Il Sung in North Korea and the United States supported the nationalist Syngman Rhee in South Korea. But, there were two political factions in opposition of each
other in South Korea and the United States chose to support the Nationalist government. Elections were held in 1948 in South Korea and Rhee was elected president. The Republic of
Korea was then established. Shortly after this event, the Democratic Peoples Republic of Korea was established in North Korea (CBS News, nd). The division between the north and
the south was a result of World War II. After the Japanese surrendered on August 15, 1945, the Soviets sent troops through both Korea and Manchuria and took control of
the provinces away from the Japanese. Having the Korean peninsula controlled by communist forces represented a threat to the free world. President Truman proposed to the Soviets a joint occupation
of Korea with the Soviets occupying the territory north of the 38th parallel and the U.S. occupying the territory south of this point (UC Berkeley, Origins of the Korean War,
nd). Guerilla warfare began before the end of 1949 when North Korean guerillas attempted to subvert the government in South Korea. South Korea began a counterattack at the end
of 1949, which eliminated most of the guerillas. On June 25, North Korea invaded South Korea and this was the official beginning of the Korean Conflict. The war would end
