definition adopted by Denman (2002) is used: globalization in higher education pertains to a convergence of educational systems and ideals designed to meet the needs of world knowledge (dissemination and
pursuit thereof) and societal advancement (civilisation-building)." The fact is that academe around the world are inherently affected by globalization (Altbach, 2004). This is not a new phenomenon, universities have
always been affected by global issues and events (Altbach, 2004). There are at least 70 universities that have been in existence since the middle of the 16th century (Altbach, 2004).
They began as global institutions and remain so (Altbach, 2004). They have always served an international student body and different geographical regions in the world have always been represented among
the faculty of universities (Altbach, 2004). The actual structure of universities has actually followed along the European and American traditions (Altbach, 2004). One thing that has changed, however, is the
use of specific languages; in the beginning, Latin was the acceptable language and the dominant language for study and research, then, German and now, English (Altbach, 2004). In fact, universities
in the United Kingdom, Australia, New Zealand, Canada and the United States hold their classes in English (Altbach, 2004). What is important about this is the fact that these are
the countries that have the highest enrollments of international students (Altbach, 2004). The role of English as the dominant language of instruction in major universities has a direct impact on
