challenged with the task of resolving these conflicts. Very often those conflicts are directly related to communication. Admittedly, there are other conflicts that have nothing to do with communication. There
is a great focus on what is happening inside organizations but there is a very strong demographic factor outside the organization that is directly related to the companys overall performance.
A furniture company in northern Washington sells other brands but it also has a very large business in custom-made furniture. The population has changed over the 60 years the company
has been in business and they now face a challenge in keeping the company profitable. The company now has more older people buying products than younger people. The most recent
market research revealed to management that the older population prefers oak furniture and younger populations prefer spruce furniture (Nicholls and Bumgardner, 2007). The older population is growing in size and
the company must change in order to meet the needs. This means they have to change their suppliers, i.e., foresters, as well as their construction processes. And, they need more
oak wood workers and fewer spruce wood workers. This change means that management must devise a new strategic plan for the company that will focus on the changing consumer base.
The conflict in the company related to this changing demographic among consumers is that wood workers prefer to work on certain types of wood and the company has more
