whose destruction has been one of the leading causes of air pollution: the automobile. I. WHAT IS HAPPENING? Mankind need only look
back to his roots - both literally and figuratively - to find the answer that will reduce the presence of air pollution caused by automobiles. The knowledge has long
been realized how leaded gasoline has had a tremendous impact on air pollution, however, it took a long time for the wheels of change to occur. Only after environmental
organizations became involved and clearly illustrated how much air pollution had increased with the growing use of cars did the government and automobile manufacturers sit up to take notice.
"Environmentalism has come full circle...In the 70s, activists and consumer advocates went to war against businesses that polluted. There was very little dialogue between the two sides. Now,
environmental activists are partnering with business and industry [to bring about positive change]" (Bovet, 1994, p. 30). The manufacturing industry has long
been blamed for human impact upon ecological and biological systems, inasmuch as consumerism has been nothing if not disastrous where air pollution is concerned. Big business was a saving
grace in the late nineteenth century; not only was it instrumental in establishing an entirely new American outlook, but it was also the beginning of a new prosperity through consumerism.
