comments on a regular basis concerning the "army of invaders" who cross "our countrys broken borders," angry viewers respond by calling in demanding the "immediate construction of a 2,000 mile-long
wall along the Mexican border" (Kirchick, 2008, p. 93). As this suggests, there is a prevalent belief among Americans that barriers, consisting of walls, fencing, etc., that runs across the
Mexican-U.S. border will provide an effective solution to border control. However, this belief assumes the efficacy of this solution and there is no evidence to support this assumption. Rather,
there is ample evidence that indicates that when people are highly motivated to accomplish their intended purpose, the presence of a wall, as well as other formidable barricades, will not
deter them. For example, in Berlin, prior to the demolition of the Berlin wall, despite its presence and the armed guards stationed atop it at all times, East Germans
continued to attempted to transverse the wall and enter West Germany throughout the decades in which barriers to doing so existed. Similarly, as long as the lure of a better
life in the U.S. and the violence and poverty of Mexico persist, there will always be those individuals who attempt to cross the border. There are, at present, roughly
