increases occurring since the turn of the 21st century. Immigration has a number of significant impacts, and this study considers the nature of immigration controls and the influence
that they have on one of the central features of ethnic communities: the creation and maintenance of the ethnic small business. In particular, this study assesses the reasons
individuals have left China to immigrate to countries of the West, what features have influenced the choice of entrepreneurship in the Chinese community, and how these factors have been impacted
by the increasing focus on immigration controls. CHAPTER I INTRODUCTION Many ethnic communities throughout the world are shaped by the creation of internal communities and the integration
of small businesses. In cities like New York, Los Angeles, and London, entire regions of these cities are defined by their ethnic cultures, and the small business infrastructures of
neighbourhood environments supports cultural autonomy. Regions called "Chinatown" exist in many major cities throughout the world, and reflect the increasing migration of people of Chinese ethnicity to urban
centres worldwide. Notably, Chinese communities demonstrate a high degree of internal autonomy, often the results of the immigration of entire families into a "host" city. In cities like
Los Angeles and New York, where multiculturalism flourishes and the flavour of the city is defined by minority ethnic populations, immigration regulations have done little to hinder the continuity of
