immigration laws. SUMMARY OF ARTICLE This very interesting article is one that is of interest to us all. It concerns a new immigration bill entitled the Enhanced Border
Security and Visa Entry Reform Bill. Because of the events of September 11, it is obvious that our immigrations laws need to be improved. More than one million
immigrants are allowed into our country each year, either documented or not. Because the terrorists were obviously all immigrants, there needs to be enhanced national security in our immigration
laws. However, there is a huge amount of controversy concerning an attachment to the above bill. This attachment, 245(i), "would allow immigrants, legal and illegal, who have employer or
family sponsors to remain in the U.S. while they seek a green card" (OSullivan 2002, PG). This has started so much controversy because Senator Robert Byrd opposed this attachment
that does in fact undermine all of the national security the bill is meant to ensure. There have been arguments from major factions that actually support 245(i) as being
important for family values. It will help keep families together, explain many. Even President Bush argued this. The article quite rightly states that family values have nothing
whatsoever to do with national security. In summary, the article finds it wholly unbelievable that the attachment of 245(i) might actually go through attached with the bill at
some point. This would make the entire bill virtually worthless as any sort of tightening up of security. Those who shouldnt be in this country are already in
