much anecdotal evidence to support the claim. Essentially, American culture is one that is fast paced, but also one that is void of traditional values. Some believe that education
as well as other human capital in the United States is not as good as what exists Japan or Germany, or many other competing nations (Becker, 1992). It seems hard
to believe since the United States has been seen as the world leader in many things. At the same time, in noticing the American culture and particularly popular culture, one
can see a "dumbing down" of the mainstream. High school curriculums have gotten easier. There are complaints that standardized tests are just too hard. Critics say that there is
little discipline in the United States and the result is an inept system that is only supplemented by an elite educational system. The elite system is reserved for the leaders
of America such as the Kennedys or the Bushes or other lesser known but just as well funded families. The system however is out of reach of most average folks.
Even so, while the underclass and middle class struggle, it seems that immigrant students do best. Students who are from ethnic backgrounds with a strong work ethic and traditions tend
to foster better grades and achievement. For instance, it is stereotypical that Asian children will do well. Some have used the controversial Bell Curve to support that idea. Interestingly, there
are fewer Chinese teachers than of other ethnicities even though Chinese culture applauds education (Bracey, 2001). The Chinese model is related to order, structure, reverence, and discipline (2001). That can
