Martin Luther King Jr., illustrating how King was likely a man who held similar thoughts to Kant. Immanuel Kant and Martin Luther King Jr. It should be noted
that the student requesting this paper asks that Kants influence on King be focused upon yet the works to be used in this research are primary sources from Kant and
King. King makes no mention of Kant and so any influence must be inferred in looking at the primary works utilized. When looking at the works of Kant in
his essay An Answer to the Question: What is Enlightenment? He noted how "it is difficult for any individual man to work himself out of the immaturity that has
all but become his nature. He has even become fond of this state and for the time being is actually incapable of using his own understanding, for no one has
ever allowed him to attempt it" (Kant [1], 1784). One could well see how this perspective is one that King may well have adhered to for his speeches and his
ideals clearly possessed an understanding that many people had no "maturity" and no real understanding of enlightenment. Kings mission, in many ways, was to help open the eyes of the
people, to help be a guide, as Kant would say, and direct people to a sense of enlightenment. In another work of
