otherwise stagnating characteristics that kept her from integrating with a greater number of social groups at school. On stage she became another person, one who did not really exist
outside the boundaries of the play; once back in her own persona, however, she would revert to her introverted ways and spend time with her two friends who were basically
the same as she was. The production audience gave her the opportunity to be in the spotlight if only for a little while
and make everyone believe how witty, fun and outgoing she was. She made them laugh and made them sigh with disbelief at the various characters she portrayed; the power
she harbored on stage became the alter ego of the person who truly wanted to be like that. Whether playing a background part or the lead in a two-player
production, she knew the moment she stepped out on the stage she held the audience in the palm of her hand as they scrutinized her, wondering if she could pull
it off and then realizing they actually thought she was good. Even the popular kids thought she was cooler than she actually was after a school play was performed.
People who would not ordinarily say hi to her in the hallways smiled and waved. At first she was not sure they were waving at her but then she
realized they must have been in the audience at a recent performance. One day the most amazing thing happened when one of the ninth grade football players asked her
out on a date; he was also in a production or two with her. She had had a crush on him for the longest time but never, ever entertained
