can yield significant insight to specific times in history. Vera Nikolaevna Figners "Memoirs of a Revolutionists" and Ivan Turgenevs "Fathers and Sons", for example, share the common purpose of
illustrating the factors and people that shaped the Russian Revolution. These books fulfill their purpose, however, using significantly different approaches. Interestingly, despite the fact that one book is
fictional and the other factual, there are many similarities between the various characters in regard to the motivations and ideologies that shape their lives.
"Fathers and Sons" is set during the six year period following the Crimean War which pitted the Italian Kingdom of Sardinia, France, England, and Turkey against Russia and ultimately
led to Russian defeat. The result was the Treaty of Paris in 1856 and the ultimate the emancipation of the Serfs. Despite its fictional basis, Turgenevs book accomplished
numerous purposes. In it he defined the term nihilist, for example. He writes:
"A nihilist is a man who does not bow to any authorities, who does not take any principle on trust, no matter with what respect that principle is surrounded" (Turgenev,
1996, p. 7). Although the term has evolved since its initial creation to
encapsulate the principles of Communism, terrorism, anarchism, and atheism, Turgenevs usage was considerably more simplistic. Perhaps one of the most interesting
