story of Tod Hackett (William Atherton), a set designer who has come to Hollywood with the dream that he will make a name for himself (Locust, 1995). Faye Greener (Karen
Black), an aspiring actress, has similar aspirations and lives in his apartment complex. The narrative shows how Faye has become consumed by her vision of movie stardom to the point
that her persona is, itself, a shallow shell without substance or integrity. She agrees to live with an older man, Homer Simpson (Donald Sutherland), in order to have access to
his money, which she feels she needs to make herself over into someone more likely to be "discovered" (Locust, 1995). The film makes it clear that within the movie
industry culture of Los Angeles, the essence of life is striving and longing for a goal, rather than actually obtaining it (Locust, 1995). The goal becomes everything and individuals mold
themselves to questionable values and standards of culture on the off chance that they "will make it." Faye personifies this as she manipulates herself and her appearance. Homer, while the
seeming opposite of Faye, is like her in that he also has a distorted sense of society and what should be his goals. Like Faye, he feels all he has
to do is wait and persist and she will eventually love him. While Tod is also not successful in his goal, he realizes that the culture of the city is
distorted. The final scene is a metaphorical commentary on the way that American culture idolizes movie stars. It is a film premiere, a major event. A crowd has
assembled to "worship" the film luminaries who are attending when, for no discernible reason, a riot erupts. This scene portrays a major theme in Wests novella (Locust, 1995). While the
