Jesus as, not only divine, but also as a man who was kind, humble, wise and courageous, among other virtues. The lives of Catholic saints also reflect these virtues, as
these individuals, in general, sought to emulate Christ in their lives and the extent to which they succeeded is reflected in the recognition of the Church through the process of
canonization. First of all, Johns Gospel indicates that Jesus was unfailingly kind, in all sorts of social situations, and that his behavior always reflected a level of understanding in
regards to issues of social justice that was atypical for his era. For example, John chapter 4 relates how Jesus traveled to Samaria and spoke with a Samaritan woman asking
her for a drink of water (John 4:7). The woman is astonished, as "Jews do not associate with Samaritans" (John 4:9). By
conversing with and teaching all peoples, Jesus showed that the depth of his love and kindness was for all humanity, not simply for his own ethnic group. Similarly, kindness is
a characteristic that exemplifies the lives of saints. Helena (c. 250-c. 330), the Christian mother of Emperor Constantine, was "known for her kindness to soldiers, the poor and prisoners" (Delaney,
2004, p. 291). Another characteristic that was demonstrated by Jesus was his humility. John, chapter 13, describes how Jesus, prior to celebrating the Passover Feast with his disciples, humbled
himself and washed the feet of each man present. In teaching his disciples this lesson, they should do likewise and "wash one anothers feet" (John 13:14). In the lives of
