nature in imagery. His poem After Apple-Picking is such a poem as it is clearly a poem about apple picking but yet also a poem about far more than just
apple picking. The following paper examines the use of imagery in Robert Frosts After Apple-Picking. Imagery in After Apple-Picking by Frost The first example of the use of imagery
in Frosts poem comes in the first lines of the work. The narrator states, "My long two-pointed ladders sticking through a tree/ Toward heaven still" (Frost 1-2). In this simple
image the reader is made aware of a ladder that is apparently pointed and seems to point out towards heaven. With this imagery the reader is made to think of
ethereal and wondrous qualities as it involves nature wherein the reader is offered an idea of God. One could well argue that this ladder is really something that leads to
heaven through engaging in the act of picking apples and existing very close to nature. A few lines later in the poem the narrator states, "I cannot rub the
strangeness from my sight/ I got from looking through a pane of glass/ I skimmed this morning from the drinking trough/ And held against the world of hoary grass./ It
melted, and I let it fall and break" (Frost 9-13). This section of the poem clearly offers the reader the image of winter coming on, and clearly indicates the end
of the picking season. When there is ice on the top of the watering trough it is clear winter is coming, and the image of looking through the glass further
adds to the imagery, in a very symbolic manner perhaps. For example, one could argue that Frost is really talking about something else, about how the world around a person
