that speaks of times gone by in relationship to society, personal virtue, religion, and the existence of chivalry. It is a story that speaks of fantasy and romance, nobility and
honor. As such it is clearly a story with a great deal of imagery as well as figurative language. The following paper examines these elements in Sir Gawain and the
Green Knight. Imagery and Language in Sir Gawain and the Green Knight Imagery, in relationship to symbolism, in this story is quite varied and can be argued
from many perspectives. For example, the imagery relating to the color green can be associated with the earth and pagan beliefs. It can also be related to other religious ideals,
or perhaps even a sense of subversion. Green is a very symbolic color in many respects and as such the imagery of this color is powerful. Green is first noted
in the Green Knight who "was green all over...clad all in green...Hose had he of the same green" (Sir Gawain and the Green Knight). But, he was also adorned in
gold as well, another very powerful image of wealth, purity, and strength perhaps. He had insects embroidered in gold, as well as birds, which again speaks of an image of
nature and power. His horse was completely green as well, giving the reader an image of magic and fantasy that is firmly imbedded in earthly things.
In terms of the color, and the use of figurative as well as symbolic, language, the narrator states that, "The knight was thus gaily dressed in green,
his hair falling around his shoulders; on his breast hung a beard, as thick and green as a bush, and the beard and the hair of his head were clipped
