are wonderfully free people. However, the truth is that much of the rest of the world sees Americans and America in a very negative light for a variety of reasons.
The following paper examines what the view or opinion of America and Americans is around the world and then examines how negative views can be changed. Image of
Americans Overseas In examining this particular subject it is perhaps important to first note that for the most part, America and Americans have been viewed differently in the past. In
essence, how other nations or nationalities feel about America differs from how they feel about Americans as individuals. However, this gap has begun to shorten in the past few years
as the negative views of America as a nation has begun to influence the negative ways in which the rest of the world sees Americans themselves. In better understanding
this we look at the words of one author who traces these opinions. This author notes, that in relationship to Indonesia, "there has been a sharp increase in U.S. favorability
ratings (to 38%, up from 15%) but a significant drop in the favorability ratings of Americans (to 46%, down from 56%)" (Pew Global Attitudes Project, 2006). And, this is a
similar finding in relationship to Russia, Turkey, and Pakistan as well (Pew Global Attitudes Project, 2006). In relationship to how Americans are perceived by the rest of the world
it is noted, by the above author, that when questioned most people around the world agree that Americans are hardworking and inventive, but that they are also seen as violent
and greedy (Pew Global Attitudes Project, 2006). Interestingly enough, even Americans will claim that they see most of their fellow citizens as greedy (Pew Global Attitudes Project, 2006). This author
