Because digital electronic imaging incorporates the single or combined application of text, graphics, handwritten or machine generated, it has proven a viable resource for virtually every type of industry and organization. Electronic imaging is the technique of automating the processing of information in document form. Once the information on a document is converted to electronic form and a proper index created the document can be stored, retrieved, transmitted, displayed, processed or printed at the speed of light (Avedon, 1994). The automated composition of electronic imaging provides the option of displaying or printing the documents, both of which occurs within seconds. Unlike earlier systems where the trade off for greater convenience was compromised quality in the transmission, todays digital electronic imaging not only maintains the original visual element of whatever is digitized but also keeps the integrity of spatial components as they existed on the paper document. Three specific formats are attributed to digital electronic imaging: 1) analog - human readable information on paper and microfilm; 2) ASCII - binary digital coded representations of information for computers on magnetic tape and discs; and 3) bit-mapped - binary digital coded representations of information for electronic imaging systems on optical disks and facsimile systems (Avedon, 1994).
