want to protect their own. Even in recent times, the spread of AIDS is far more serious in other nations, and people from various countries that are less developed also
get diseases that have been eradicated here. That is one reason why immigration is still treated carefully. When immigrants first began to arrive, officials of the United States government wanted
to be sure that immigrants did not have any serious diseases or disorders. Of course, there had to be a screening process to make sure that the public health was
protected. Thus, when people came to Ellis Island in masses at the turn of the century, they had to undergo a variety of exams to make sure that they were
relatively healthy and would not contaminate the citizens of the United States. For instance, eye examinations for Trachoma were provided ("American Identity," 2000). Immigrants who had been chalked
underwent more serious and thorough medical inspections in gender segregated rooms ("American Identity," 2000). Prior to 1914, however, male doctors would examine female immigrants with matrons present but in 1914,
two women doctors had been hired to conduct exams for female subjects (2000). Men who were marked E for eyes had been examined using specialized charts with different alphabets
and the Hebrew alphabet chart, for example, was utilized for Yiddish speakers (2000). Individuals marked with a K had been suspected for hernia (2000). Hernia is of course not
a very serious condition and today, merely requires surgical repair. It is not contagious. Yet, many immigrants were expected to work and without such an operation, an immigrant is limited
