Background People have taken drugs for various purposes for hundreds of years, but it is only in the last hundred years that advances in pharmacology and chemistry have created substances
so addictive and powerful as to make them the threat we face now (Drugs of abuse - the facts, 2004). Abused drugs, which include prescription drugs as well as "street"
drugs, include depressants, stimulants, and hallucinogens; as well as tobacco and alcohol, though we wont consider the last two substances here (Drugs of abuse - the facts, 2004). Most
drugs in the past were made from plants, such as heroin from poppies, but today drugs like Ecstasy are synthesized from chemicals (Drugs of abuse - the facts, 2004).
Depressants are drugs like heroin and barbiturates; they provide relief from stress and anxiety by impacting the cerntral nervous system (Drugs of abuse - the facts, 2004). However,
they "tend to produce psychological dependence" and "withdrawal from heavy use is severe" (Drugs of abuse - 2004). Stimulants (crack, cocaine, amphetamines) increase central nervous system activity, and can cause
symptoms similar to alcohol intoxication (Drugs of abuse - 2004). They can also cause impaired judgment, violent bvehavior, and have the potential to induce a "full-blow delusional psychosis" (Drugs
of abuse - 2004). Hallucinogens include LSD and Ecstasy, among others, and generally produce feelings of euphoria, but can also induce hallucinations, delusions and paranoia (Drugs of abuse - 2004).
