spokesman for SEMAs Racers Against Street Racing (RASR), due to the needless tragedies that often result from this illegal activity (Amato challenges, 2003). Amato understands the thrill and exhilaration of
racing, but he calls upon his fellow racers to help get the message out to kids not "to be stupid about it" (Amato challenges, 2003). Street racing is exciting to
todays young people, but it is also "dangerous, disorganized and illegal" (Stokes, 2003, p. 77). The nature of street racing has changed somewhat from the days when it was
epitomized by screen idol James Dean. There is a new type of automotive enthusiast: the "young, urban fan of small import cars that have been lovingly overhauled--or tuned--to staggering levels
of performance" (Stewart, 2005, p. 70). The proliferation of tuner cars from being a part of Southern California subculture to becoming a mass-market phenomenon can be traced to the 2001
film The Fast and the Furious, which has illegal street racing as a central component of the plot (Stewart, 2005). However, since its inception, street racing has also been a
prevalent component in the real-world of the tuner-car scene. Nevertheless, some critics argue that the film added "a tanker-load of fuel to an already ferocious fire" (Stewart, 2005, p. 70).
Evidence of this is quite apparent in traffic-related deaths in Southern Californias San Fernando Valley, which is a tuner-car hotbed of activity. In 2004, traffic-related deaths were up by
17 percent in this area and at least 8 of these deaths have been directly connected to illegal street racing incidents (Stewart, 2005). Los Angeles officials have initiated a touch
