complex, definition of sorts regarding the elephant stating how it is "A species that...not only has been worshipped as god and slaughtered for meat or ivory, carried us and our
heaviest burdens but also has trampled crops and people alike, and acted as a gentle ambassador of peace as earnestly as it has fiercely fought battles through the centuries" (Sukumar
57). With this in mind the following paper examines the illegal ivory trade. Illegal Ivory Trade Although poaching of elephants is
illegal it still continues, and it continues in a very strong manner. As one author notes the following in these regards: "Elephant carcasses once again unceremoniously litter Kenyas national park
lands. Kenya Wildlife Service Director J.M. Kioko recently reported that Somali poachers armed with AK-47 rifles ambushed a herd of 11 elephants," massacring all but one. Said Director Kioko, "this
slaughter of a family of ten elephants is the largest incident in which an entire family of elephants has been poached since KWSs establishment in 1989.... This and other previous
incidents in Kenya suggest that the ivory markets are active and poachers are actively feeding the illegal trade in ivory" (Roberts). Perhaps, as in the past, the problem of
poaching is not always the real fault of the poachers as much as it is the blame of the consumers who want the ivory. Or, as Roberts also notes, "Much
