characters who suddenly come of age, perhaps, through an experience and find themselves no longer naive. Or we may find a character whose life has been lived in a very structured manner, only to have an experience open their eyes and thus remove their blinders. In essence, experiences such as these are those that insist we no longer remain ignorant, forcing us to, at least from one perspective, become wiser to the realities of life. These experiences are not often pleasant and as such the people may well wish they had remained ignorant. But, the true blissful nature, according to Gray, comes from the painful wisdoms. The following paper applies this to two short stories. The first story is Flannery OConnors "Good Country People." The second story to be examined in this context is Toni Cade Bambaras "The Lesson." Good Country People In this story we have Joy/Hulga who seems to have the potential for so much in her life. As a graduated student of philosophy she, presumably, has the knowledge and the wisdom to rise above the ridiculous and find truth. But, it is her anger, her emotions, and her depression perhaps, which keep her stuck. She has actively chosen not to use her knowledge for her own enlightenment. Joy/Hulga has actively chosen to be pessimistic about life and about people. She is bitter and angry, which is clearly understandable, yet she has not used her intelligence to rise above it all and find truth. She cannot exhibit kindness and is essentially a woman of angry arrogance. She is rude to people and cares nothing for anyone.
