dreams, lies, love and ignorance, to name but a few of the possible themes one could pick from this intense and deeply real story. It is the tale of a man who spends his whole life thinking he is something he is not. It is the story of a man who wants success and follows the lies of the American Dream. As one author or critic notes, Miller is many things and he "doesnt have just one tragic flaw...he has many (disloyal, headstrong, short tempered, proud, false, etc)" (Death of a Salesman). With that in mind the following paper takes one particular theme, ignorance, and examines how Miller uses means of character development to express that theme. Ignorance and Willy Loman One of the most powerful forms of character development used to express the theme of ignorance in this play, and all other themes as well, is dialogue. This is primary due to the fact that it is a play and not a novel and as such presents mainly dialogue. In the beginning of the play we see Willys wife Linda asking Willy when he will ask for this New York desk job. She is not pressuring him, or being a nagging wife in doing so. What she is doing is supporting him and encouraging his dreams, although they are false. Because of this sort of set-up we are immediately given a sense that Willy has no concept of reality concerning his worth. This comes when he tells his wife, "If old man Wagner was alive Id a been in charge of New York now. That man was a prince, he was a masterful man" (Miller 4). It may well be that the one word in this dialogue that is indicating Willys ignorance is the word "If." ...
