Store, Inc. by 10/2001 Please When Kates five year old daughter Abby came home with a doll in
her pocket that she had not purchased, Kate realized the solution would not be as easy as simply taking the doll back. The store where Abby had stolen the
doll was just blocks from her house, but one where Kate rarely shopped; the shop owner had at one time accused Kate herself of taking an extra towel, and it
took them over 40 minutes to resolve the dispute in Kates favor. Embarrassed by the interaction, Kate avoided the store except when necessary. Kate knew if she or
Abby returned the doll, the manager might recognize them from their earlier interaction and might not believe their story. Kate turned to her mother, Edna, for some help and
advice about the best approach to handling this. Edna made some interesting suggestions, including calling the police and having them return the doll. Unfortunately, Kates ex-husband, Pete, worked
for the local police department, and she also feared any problems related to Abbys upbringing that might result if Pete were contacted. Kate and Edna came up with
a plan; Kate would go into the store, pretend to be shopping, and simply place the doll on the shelf and leave. As Edna argued: "What could
possibly go wrong?" Kate spoke with Abby about her own behavior and then dropper her at school. Five minutes after leaving Abby off, Kate realized that the bag that
