development as a character. Sandra Cisnero and Leslie Silko are two cultural women who write powerful novels of their people, their culture, and in doing so provide the reader with
identity that is not only related to the individual but to cultures as well. The following paper examines identity in Sandra Cisneros "Caramelo" and Leslie Silkos "Ceremony." The paper examines
each story separately and then compares and contrasts the two in a final section. Caramello Cisnero is primarily a mix of Spanish and Mexican. This particular story is
one that is largely based on her own family, a family in Chicago yet a family that deeply belongs to Mexico and colorful heritage. In this simple premise we see
how the identity of the story involves many different characters, a culture in essence, that lives in the United States but is clearly of an identity that is set apart
from the United States. The entire novel provides us with numerous characters, all of whom are shaped by Mexican identity in one way or another. In terms of specifics
there is the father, a man who feels a deep connection with the past, and perhaps more importantly, the Mexican Revolution. It is what has molded him and the revolution
is seen throughout the text as it influences how others must associate and relate with the father. AS one example we note that the primary characters name, Celaya, is actually
the name of a town in the revolution. This revolution is "her fathers Waterloo" and serves as a powerful foundation of his identity and an identity of many Mexicans, or
