Ulysses and his journey. But, from other perspectives it is also the story of his son as well as his wife. Ulysses son Telechamus is a young man coming into his identity in this story. The following paper examines Telecahums lack of, and search for, identity in Homers Odyssey. Telemachus and Identity Telechamus is a prince, a prince who has, for the most part, grown up. However, he is also a young man who has never seen or known his father. In ancient stories it is often a young man without knowledge or personal connection to his father that most seriously seeks his own identity. Telechamus has never had his father there to teach him, or help form his identity, presenting a male father figure for his instruction and growth into a man. As such the story first has Telechamus somewhat lost as he is faced with many suitors who are pursuing his mother and making a shambles of their kingdom and goods. At one point when the gods are talking Minerva, one of the goddesses, states that, although Ulysses surely needs help, Telemachus is also in need of assistance: "Telemachus, the blooming heir Of sea-girt Ithaca, demands my care; Tis mine to form his green, unpractised years In sage debates...To save the state" (Homer Book I). The reader begins to see that Telemachus is not wise enough to be prepared for the intrusion of the suitors and his own role as prince. He is young and very inexperienced: "his bloomy face Glowing celestial sweet, with godlike grace Amid the circle shines: but hope and fear (Painful vicissitude!) his bosom tear" (Homer Book I).
