Leoni, loses her identity and seeks another one, or several, to take its place. The following paper examines the theme of identity in Dinesens "The Dreamers." The Dreamers
In the beginning of this story we note that Pellegrina Leoni is an opera singer, a great voice, who has lost her capability of singing due to a fire. Singing
opera has been her life, and also been her identity. She was her voice, she was her career, she was her singing. It is much like an athlete losing his
legs or the ability to walk, leaving them without the identity they relied on for their happiness and fulfillment. When a persons entire identity is wrapped up in something they
are able to do they are very vulnerable when that one skill is taken away. In such cases either a person will give up living, giving up finding any
meaning in life, or seek out a new identity, or a deeper identity. Some people who suffer such realities can find that their identity really has little to do with
the skill they once had, but rather their passion for that subject matter. For example, an opera singer such as Leoni may well have found that her identity could
have been maintained through involvement in opera, or through writing opera. Of course, such possibilities may not work for some who truly have one gift, a gift that is taken
away. This appears to be the case with Leoni. Without her voice Leoni truly does go in search of an identity that could perhaps give her the desire to
