is a story about struggle and identity, society and ultimate destruction in many ways. The story involves Lyman and Henry Junior, both owners of a red convertible that gives them
joy, even till the end. The following paper examines the theme of identity and cultural borders in Erdrichs short story. Identity and Cultural Borders in The Red Convertible
by Erdrich In many ways the identity of the two young men is deeply connected with the red convertible. Although it is not
always a part of the story and what is actively going on, it symbolizes their relationship and that relationship is a very powerful part of their identity. One sees it
as perhaps more important, in terms of identity, to the character of Lyman because he is the one telling the story, but one can also see how it is part
of the identity of Henry as well. Both Lyman and Henry are amazed at this car when they see it and then
buy it. It consumes their summer, one summer, as they drive everywhere and simply enjoy life. They have no worried and they enjoy each others company, often silently, in very
subtle and strong ways. It is something that connects the two, and means something to the two of them. It is a material object, an object of the white mans
world it seems, but the two do not see that nor does it really play into their joy of the car. But, for the reader it is very symbolic for
