2005 saw 8.3 million victims of identity theft, equating to 3.7% of the population (FTC, 2006). Of these 3.3 million adults; 1.5% of the population, had an experience with credit
card accounts, slightly ahead of the 3.2 million victims; 1.4% of the population, who suffered credit card hijacking (FTC, 2007). Others; 1.8 million, or just less than 1% of the
population had new accounts opened in their names using their personal details and the vast majority of all identity thefts; 84%, in cases where the victim did not know the
thief (FTC, 2006). When it is considered that about 10% of these thefts saw thieves getting away with more than US $6,000,
and 56% of the victims had no idea regarding how the thieves go hold of their information, the scope of the problem can be appreciated. Identity theft also has a
high cost to business, in addition to the cost of dealing with the fraudulent transactions there is a high likelihood that is the identity theft took place, or even if
they were simply a security breach, through a business relationship that the business will lose the customer, research that indicated 20% of customers will immediately and the business relationship, and
a further 40% will consider the ending of that relationship (Friedenberg, 2006, quoted Brody et al, 2007). This research took to the United States, however it is not a problem
which is isolated to the United States and it is often speculated that social trends in crime patterns such as this are often observed in other countries at a later
