provides an overview of identity theft, discussing the problems, solutions, and efforts to make identity theft harder. Identity Theft There is
little doubt in anyones mind that identity theft is theft and as such is a crime. Identity theft and identity fraud are two terms that are used quite often and
sometimes interchangeably. They apply "to all types of crime in which someone wrongfully obtains and uses another persons personal data in some way that involves fraud or deception, typically for
economic gain" (U.S. Department of Justice, 2006). Many may believe that stealing ones identity is all but impossible for each individual has
many items which are specific to them, numbers and different ways of identifying themselves that cannot truly be duplicated. However, as the Department of Justice (2006) indicates, "Unlike your fingerprints,
which are unique to you and cannot be given to someone else for their use, your personal data ? especially your Social Security number, your bank account or credit card
number, your telephone calling card number, and other valuable identifying data ? can be used, if they fall into the wrong hands, to personally profit at your expense." According to
the Social Security Department (2006) "Identity theft is much more than misuse of a Social Security number-it can also include credit card and mail fraud." In short, there are many
ways to steal identity. An individual only needs to gain access to peoples numbers for credit cards or banking information and identity
