A Marxist approach for example sees society as defined by class whereas a feminist approach views society as defined by gender. The Chicago school embraces ideas pertinent to the fact that social environment is important. A basic idea, particularly when discussing trends and different approaches through the world is to see much of what occurs as something that happens naturally or something that is a social construction. Both views are credible but different. On one hand, there is culture that is created and on the other are principles entrenched in theories that highlight nature as being integral to environmental concerns. Of course, that is a simplistic statement about each theory, but a student writing on this subject will want to reflect on these theories in terms of the readings done in class as well as on other materials presented in sociological textbooks. Drawing examples from real life and using material from class discussions is also a good idea. A student writing on this subject will want to note that the idea of competing cultures for example has to do with the fact that there are an array of different cultures that may compete.
