live according to a standard that seems to be present by the majority. This severely limits many individuals in their search for identity within their particular culture and within society.
They are all but forced to think that they are as society portrays them. They are told where they should live, how they should live and who they should be,
according to societys expectations. However, some struggle against this reality, working hard to find their identity despite societys assumptions. These are people, perhaps, who make their way out of the
ghetto, escaping the reality that was forced upon them. They strive and struggle to find themselves in their culture and the culture that surrounds them. This is one of the
primary themes in Toni Cade Bambaras "The Lesson" and George C. Wolfes "101 Dalmations." The following paper discusses the two stories separately, illustrating how these individuals come to a realization
that allows them to look beyond societys definition of them, and thus begin to discover their own identity. Bambara In Bambaras "The Lesson" we have a young girl
who is firmly established in her little community. She has friends and she has beliefs. She is strong willed but at the beginning of the story she is a young
girl who has no real identity aside from that which is perhaps preconceived by her and her community. We see this young ignorance in the opening lines of this short
story: "Back in the days when everyone was old and stupid or young and foolish and me and Sugar were the only ones just right, this lady moved on our
