our identity is largely a result of environmental factors, others that argue we need interaction with others in developing our identity, and others that focus on how our identity is essentially part of the larger picture as a whole. These are just a few of the possible perspectives taken when discussing the psychological reality of identity. The following paper examines identity, primarily from a constructionist perspective, discussing the opinions or theories of figures such as Ken Gergen and Dan McAdams. Identity Ken Gergen is "Professor of Psychology, Swarthmore College" and is considered to be a "Foundational voice in the development of social constructivism in social psychology and the social sciences" (Narrativepsych.com, 2005). Part of the constructionist perspective is apparently how people develop their own identity, and then they see if such is proven right. If they find that, according to the perceptions of others, they are not perhaps loyal, then they essentially alter their identity to take that into consideration. Another important aspect of the constructionist perspective involves the narrative wherein the individual really consciously takes into consideration their surrounding society, in one way or another, and incorporates that into their identity. Gergen discusses much of these considerations in his work "The Saturated Self." In "The Saturated Self" Gergen states that, "one cannot depend on a solid confirmation of identity, nor on comfortable patterns of authentic action (p. 147). According to this philosophy, we are in being drawn into a charade of constructed personality fronts" (Strategic Manipulator, 2005). It is the society around us, or one particular environment or situation at a time that determines how we will express ourselves (Strategic Manipulator, 2005).
