are not always bad for an organization and neither is conflict. In fact, change theorists have identified conflict as one of the mitigating factors in beneficial change. As a result, appropriate managed conflict in an organizational setting can be constructive, while poorly managed conflict can be destructive. Gatlin, Wysocki and Kepner (2002) begin their assessment of conflict in the workplace by using the Websters Dictionary definition of conflict, which is: "a sharp disagreement or opposition of interest or ideas." In other words, the ideas of an individual, group or organization are in opposition to the ideas of another individual, group or organization. In terms of the workplace setting, it can be argued that the most difficult conflicts that must be managed are those that occur when the ideas of the individuals are in opposition to the ideas of the organization. Manageable conflict occurs when challenges are identified and utilized as a basis for change. For example, a small company might struggle with their archaic ordering system, but the owner might be unwilling to implement an automated system because it is costly. One employees view of the necessity of an automated system, in direct conflict with the owner, may become the impetus for a report on the cost-effectiveness of computerized systems that in turn are used as the basis for a change initiative. The owner, then, comes to understand the value of the automated system and the cost-effectiveness of what he initially believed to be a costly change. This example demonstrates the use of constructive conflict in a beneficial way, as a means to foster internal improvements.
