Marx created the communist model in his Communist Manifesto. For Tocqueville, America represented something important. It was a new system that represented hope for the future. Tocqueville (2001) writes: "Thus,
the question is not how to reconstruct aristocratic society, but how to make liberty proceed out of that democratic state of society in which God has placed us" (p.306). For
Marx, there would be two significant objections, which are that God is real and also that democracy is good. Tocquevilles Democracy in America is a classic work. He wrote
it in the early part of the nineteenth century but his voice reverberates today. This French traveler to the new world wrote that he saw something more in America in
that he saw the image of democracy itself. Yet, while each of these theorists embraced different conceptions of how government should be run, they basically wanted the same things. Both
Marx and Tocqueville wanted freedom and equality to flourish. Again, freedom is viewed differently for each of these theorists. What is freedom anyway? For Janis Joplin several decades ago, freedom
was another word for nothing left to lose. In some way, this may be equated with the less materialistic ideal of communism. For Marx, the freedom was not in the
ability to acquire wealth, or the opportunities, but rather in equality. It was the ability to live and feel good about ones environment. For Marx, class defines society and people
are unhappy because of how capitalism is implemented. Marx also says that when the conception and execution of labor are separated, the work is no more human than that of
