What is interesting about this trend is that decades of research had revealed that employees who work more than 40 hours per week become significantly less productive. Unions began pushing for the 40-hour work week in both the U.S. and the UK in the early 19th century and by the end of the century, it had become the norm. The unions provided research to demonstrate that this was the most productive amount of time but managers had their own research which confirmed this argument (Robinson, 2012). Henry Ford was one who embraced the eight-hour day and saw productivity soar. One of the consequences of working longer days and longer weeks was an increase in industrial accidents, which is very costly (Robinson, 2012). People are tired after eight hours and they are tired after 40 hours. They need to rest because they just become more and more tired after the 8 hours in a day and 40 hours in a week. This is as true for knowledge work as it is for manual work. Further, productivity does not increase in a one-to-one ratio; if a worker works 50 percent more hours, he does not produce 50 percent more widgets or ideas (Robinson, 2012). He may produce 20 or 25 percent more until the ratio becomes a negative figure. There is an exception to this rule. A study from the Business Roundtable in the 1980s showed that a company could achieve short-term gains by increasing the work week to 60 or 70 hours for no more than a few weeks if the goal was to meet a critical deadline.
