caused a great deal of controversy for it depicted a woman who ultimately leaves her husband and her children in search of herself, something that was not looked kindly upon
in the late 1800s. Throughout Ibsens play the reader/viewer watches as the character of Nora develops, and through her development one can clearly see the subtle literary device of language
and character development that Ibsen used to demonstrate a subversive theme; feminism and the condition of humanity. The following paper examines this. Ibsens A Dolls House As mentioned,
this play urged on a great deal of controversy at its time of production. This was because women were expected to be nothing more than good mothers and wives. Ibsen
received a great deal of criticism, it seems, concerning the depiction of a woman who would leave her family and in reply he noted, "I am not a member of
the Womens League. Whatever I have written has been without conscious thought of propaganda ... My task has been the description of humanity" (Campo). However, it is also clear that
he did speak of some sort of feminism as well, although, as one lecturer noted, "what version of feminism Ibsen addresses and advocates for" seems vague (Hutchinson).
One could argue that perhaps Ibsen told the press he was not a feminist in order to get the media off his back, but the
truth is that his play is about humanity and reality as it involves injustice. "He wasnt trying to turn the male into a face of the enemy, he was just
showing that being a wife meant having no status except as caretaker of her family and provider of sex for her husband" (Campo).
