1. Introduction The medical knowledge of today has developed over a relatively short period of time, the competition of
the human genome project and the development of x-rays and scans have allowed the body to be examined in more detail than ever before. At the same time scientific knowledge
and experimental techniques using technology have created new treatments and cures. Much of the knowledge gained has shown former beliefs regarding the body and its treatment to have been erroneous,
based on faulty assumptions or misguided ideas. However, when we look at todays ideas and the way they have developed the theories and knowledge of the past has been a
stepping stone to new ideas as well as a foundation. In the area of iatrochemists and iatromechanics of both Britain and Europe this is very true, especially with their use
of metallic compounds including mercury. The knowledge pf the past gaining in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries not only added to the knowledge, but also acted as a drive, with
theorists such as Theophrastus Bombastus von Hohenheim, better known as Paracelsus, serving as the tool to stir up the ideas and introduce the acceptance of new experimental techniques (Porter,
