sketch, for Iagos complexity has yet to be duplicated and continues to be both studied and hotly debated by literary critics. While Iago masks his true motives to Othello,
he is truly unique in that in his frequent dialogues or asides to audiences/readers, he is completely honest about his intentions (Bradley 201). He explains what he is going
to do to Othello with self-congratulatory zeal and without apology. Iago feels his hatred of Othello is justified, and therefore, there is no reason to feel guilty. Furthermore,
Iago is, according to literary critic Harold Bloom "the most intelligent character in the play" and possesses the ability to make "accurate estimates of character" (25) that always allows him
to remain at least one step ahead of his Moorish nemesis. In order to gain greater insight into Iagos character, one must first consider his background. A.C. Bradley,
who is perhaps the foremost authority on the study of Shakespearean tragedies, noted of Iago, "Iago, we gather, was a Venetian soldier, eight-and-twenty years of age, who had seen
a good deal of service and had a high reputation for courage. Of his origin we are ignorant, but, unless I am mistaken, he was not of gentle birth or
breeding. He does not strike one as a degraded man of culture: for all his great powers, he is vulgar, and his probable want of military science may well be
